Resurgent Lloyd Harris Shines in Chengdu With First ATP Quarter-Final Since 2023

South African tennis player Lloyd Harris continued his impressive comeback by reaching his first ATP Tour quarter-final since 2023 at the Chengdu Open in China. The 29-year-old produced a series of strong performances, including a straight-sets victory over top seed Valentin Vacherot, before his run ended against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.

Harris entered the ATP 250 tournament ranked world No. 136 and had to fight through qualifying to secure a place in the main draw. His performance in Chengdu offered further evidence that he is regaining form after a difficult period disrupted by injuries.

Harris Makes Strong Start in Chengdu

The South African began his campaign with victories over Japan’s Kenta Miyoshi and Canada’s Alexis Galarneau in qualifying, advancing without dropping a set.

He carried that momentum into the main draw, defeating American Aleksandar Kovacevic 6–4, 6–4. Harris delivered 13 aces in the match, demonstrating the effectiveness of his powerful serve.

The victory set up a challenging encounter against Vacherot, the tournament’s top seed, in the round of 16.

Stunning Upset Against Top Seed Vacherot

Harris produced one of his best performances of the tournament against Vacherot, winning 6–4, 7–6(5) to book his place in the quarter-finals.

His serving proved decisive throughout the contest. The South African fired 16 aces, won 89% of points behind his first serve and did not face a single break point.

The result marked a significant milestone in Harris’s comeback, securing his first ATP Tour quarter-final appearance since 2023.

Speaking after the victory, Harris expressed satisfaction with his progress following the challenges he faced during his injury recovery.

He also credited his qualifying matches for helping him become familiar with the court conditions before facing the tournament’s leading players.

Hurkacz Ends Harris’s Impressive Run

Harris’s campaign concluded in the quarter-finals against fifth seed Hubert Hurkacz, who prevailed 7–6(10), 6–4.

The opening set featured a closely contested serving battle, with neither player able to secure a decisive advantage during regular play. Harris pushed Hurkacz to the limit in a 22-point tie-break but eventually lost it 12–10.

In the second set, a single break of serve proved sufficient for the Polish player to secure victory and advance to the semi-finals.

Despite the defeat, Harris left Chengdu with valuable momentum and renewed confidence as he continued his climb back up the world rankings.

A Promising Sign for South African Tennis

Harris’s performances in China represent an encouraging development for South African tennis. After spending time competing on the Challenger circuit to rebuild his ranking and match fitness, he has shown that he can once again challenge established players on the ATP Tour.

His powerful serve remains one of his greatest weapons, while his ability to maintain composure in high-pressure situations was evident during the victory over Vacherot and the tight tie-break against Hurkacz.

The next challenge will be to turn these promising performances into consistent results across the remainder of the season.

The bottom line: Lloyd Harris’s run to the Chengdu Open quarter-finals represents an important step in his comeback. Although Hurkacz ended his campaign, the South African’s victory over the top seed demonstrated his potential to return to a higher level of competition.
